How to Craft Jharokha Wall Decor using Cardboard and Clay detailing

Decorating your home with unique and traditional pieces can add a touch of elegance and cultural richness. One such captivating decor item is the Jharokha, an intricately designed window frame that has been a staple in Indian architecture for centuries. Originating from the palaces and havelis of Rajasthan, the Jharokha serves as both a decorative and functional element. In this craft project, we’ll guide you through creating your own Jharokha wall decor, bringing a piece of Indian heritage into your living space.

Materials Needed

  1. Cardboard Sheets: Sturdy and thick for the frame and details. I am using File card , I purchase it from local stationey shop

  3. Ruler and Pencil: For precise measurements and markings.

  5. Acrylic Paints and Brushes: You can use any color, I have used a wall paint that was available
  6. Epoxy Clay : Clay work for intricate designs https://amzn.to/4dU6JWq

  8. Varnish or Mod Podge: To protect the finished piece. https://amzn.to/4bOgofa

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Design Printout: Take a print out of the Jharokha design
  2. Cu tting : Cut all the layer you want to add the depth and details
  3. Layering : Cut stripes and add it as side wall as show in the video, size of the stripe can vary not specific
  4. Assembling the Jharokha: Stick all layer together one by one
  5. Clay work : I am using shape it clay for intricate designs, Mix two parts of the clay in small parts or you will waste the clay as it get dried in sometime
  6. Finishing Touches: Paint it with desired color and apply coat of varnish
  7. Lights : I am using led strips on backlight and two spot light of 1 watt on sides
  8. Mounting the Jharokha: I am using a iron wire to make a hook on the back

Tips for Customization

  • Mirror Inserts: For added functionality, you can insert a mirror in the center of the Jharokha.
  • Personal Touches: Incorporate elements that reflect your personal style or regional motifs from your culture.
