Title: DIY Mahalaxmi Temple Deepstambh — Ganpati decoration decor

A simple, budget-friendly Deepstambh inspired by the Mahalaxmi Kolhapur temple — made entirely from file card and basic craft materials. This little temple tower brings a stone-like, aged look to any Ganpati setup and is perfect for reels, Instagram, and festive displays
Materials
- File card (sturdy card stock)
- Printed template (PDF) — Download
- Glue: Fevibond, Fevicol, Flexkwik
- Iron wire (for reinforcing round corners)
- Paper tape (for joining edges)
- Tissue paper (for rough stone texture)
- Battery-operated candles Amazon
- Color coat supplies (see recipe below)
- Basic tools: scissors/craft knife, ruler, pencil, cutting mat.
Color coat (stone finish) — Recipe & Method
Recipe:
- 1 Part Cornflour
- 1 Part Fevicol (white PVA glue)
- Water to make a paste (thin enough to brush)
- A few drops of black acrylic or poster colour to get a grey/stone hue
Method:
- Mix cornflour and Fevicol into a thick paste.
- Add small amounts of water until the mix becomes brushable.
- Mix in black colour drop-by-drop until the desired stone-grey shade appears. Note : Keep the shade lil bright as fevicol dries it become trasparent and whole shade will become darker
- This mixture acts like a textured primer — it helps tissue paper stick and gives a grainy stone finish when dried.
Template & Downloads
A printable PDF template is available for the Deepstambh pieces (placeholder link). Print the template on regular paper, stick it to the file card as a guide and cut the shapes precisely.
Step-by-step — As usual, following the same sequence used in my other Ganpati projects
1. Prepare the template
- Print the template .
- Mount the printed template onto file card with a light glue tack or tape.
2. Cut the main panels
- Cut all main tower panels and base pieces from file card following the template.
- Shape the cardboard round and join the edges using fevibond
3. Reinforce round corners
- For curved or rounded top sections, insert a length of thin iron wire along the curve edge inside the card sandwich. This gives stability and helps keep the curve smooth.
4. Join edges
- Use paper tape on the inside seams to hold panels in alignment.
- Apply Fevibond or Fevicol to glue seams permanently. Use clips or clothespins to hold while drying.
- For fast-setting joins (small tabs), use Flexkwik sparingly.
5. Build the base and stack the tiers
- Assemble the base first — make sure it is level and stable.
- Stack the tower tiers from largest to smallest, gluing and taping each level securely.
- Check symmetry at each step so the Deepstambh reads like a carved pillar.
6. Add tissue texture
- Crumple small pieces of tissue paper and stick them over the panels using the cornflour-Fevicol mixture as adhesive.
- Smooth some areas and leave others rough to get a natural stone texture.
- Let the layers dry completely before moving on (drying time varies with humidity).
7. Apply the stone colour coat
- Brush the cornflour–Fevicol–paint mixture in thin layers.
- For depth, apply 1–2 base coats and then lightly dry-brush a lighter grey or even a touch of white to highlight edges and details.
8. Finishing touches
- Add brick texture, you can draw it with brighter shade then the grey ur are using
- Paint darker wash in recessed areas to mimic aged stone.
- Place battery-operated candles inside the niches or around the base for a warm glow.
Photos & Video
- Insert step-by-step photos in between steps to make the tutorial easier to follow (placeholders in the template).
