DIY Traditional Yali Bracket Wall Art

Home décor is an essential aspect of creating a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing environment. Traditional home setups often feature intricate wooden carvings that add a touch of elegance and cultural heritage to the space. One such popular decorative element is the Yali bracket, a traditional piece of wall art known for its detailed carvings and historical significance. However, authentic wooden Yali brackets can be quite expensive. In this article, we will guide you through creating a DIY version of the Yali bracket using cardboard and epoxy clay, offering a cost-effective yet beautiful alternative.

Materials Needed:

  • Printout of Yali Design: This serves as your template.
  • Cardboard: The primary structure of your Yali bracket.
  • Shape It Clay: Used for adding details and texture.
  • Paper Straw: Provides structural support.
  • Fabric Glue: For initial assembly.
  • Fevibond Glue: For stronger bonding.
  • Flexkwik (SuperGlue): For quick fixes.
  • Fevicol: General-purpose adhesive. (Types of Glue)

Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Prepare Your Template

  1. Print out a detailed Yali design. Ensure the design is clear and appropriately sized for your wall art. Template Download : Click Here
  2. Cut out the details in the design as show in tutorial video.

Step 2: Cut the Cardboard

  1. Cardboard cutout will be the center base of sculpture
  2. Carefully cut out the cardboard along the traced lines using a sharp utility knife. This will form the base of your Yali bracket.

Step 3: Assemble the Base

  1. Cut additional cardboard pieces to create the structural elements of the bracket (e.g., arms, support beams).
  2. You can use a wooden plank or any firm base on which we going to attach the yali scuplture

Step 4: Add Structural Support

  1. I love this process of adding mesh in different designs, though it will be on back side but i love making symmetric designs and add as much you can if you are making with cardboard as this will be the main pillar of the project
  2. Use Fevibond to stick the joints and pour drops of superglue on the joints and cardboard, that would make the whole structure strong and firm

Step 5: Sculpt the Details

  1. Using tissue paper as a base structure of scupture, Main reason for using this is to save clay , as we know clay is expensive and also this wouldd decrease the weight of the scupture
  2. Mix and knead the Shape It clay according to the package instructions.
  3. Roll it flat and apply a layer of clay above the tissue
  4. Begin sculpting the intricate details of the Yali design onto the cardboard base. This step requires patience and precision to mimic the traditional carved look.
  5. Allow the clay to dry completely. This may take 2 hours

Step 6: Fixing to Base & Intricate Design

  1. Using Iron wire to join the sculpture to the bracket
    • Insert two long iron wire in the cardboard area of the sculpture and apply fevibond while inserting and also add 2 3 drops of superglue in that area
    • Align the sculpture in the center and pierce the iron wire on the cardboard
    • Apply fevibond and superglue on cardboard end of the wire and also apply some clay to make it more firm.
  2. I am using Fabric Glue and Fevicryl 3d outliner for intricate designs
  3. Also this would hide and cover the cracks and dents on the clay surface

Step 7: Paint and Finish

  1. Once the glue is fully dry, paint it using Brown Acrylic color
  2. I am not using any varnsih to seal as I am very much satisfied with the acrylics output

Step 8: Mounting Your Yali Bracket

  1. Using the same iron wires to make a hook behind on the mesh part
  2. i have drilled a hole from back part on which the Yali sculpture touches the bracket, this is important becuase the wieght of the sculpture is more than the bracket so the hook should be connected to the sculpture

Embrace your creativity and bring a piece of tradition into your modern home with this DIY Yali bracket project. Happy crafting!
